The Little Things: They Add Up, Sometimes to Something Underwhelming

I love Denzel. I think Mr. Washington’s acting skills are top shelf, primo, well crafted, and all around just plain good. I see all of his movies; if I discover one I missed, well then I see that too.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I recently subscribed to HBO Max so that I could see the new Warner Brothers movies – if you are not aware, WB has decided to stream all of its new 2021 releases on HBO Max for 30 days simultaneously with the release in the theater. This, dear reader, is how I found The Little Things. And believe me when I say this is aptly named, but not necessary in the best way possible.

I Care A Lot: Yeah, Ok, Sure

This movie was recommended to me by a friend named Alex 1.0  who nearly wasn’t a friend for recommending this movie. You see, 15 minutes into the movie Peter Dinklage hadn’t appeared and I really, really needed for him to save the day because the protagonist of the story was the worst – I mean I even told Jennifer the Yankee, who is amazingly anxious to see this movie, that is as the scariest movie I had ever seen in my entire life. how is that for a ringing endorsement? The thing is, the horror wasn’t because this was a horror movie, it’s because I am a middle-aged American.  To be fair, I also didn’t know what the movie was about. I watched it without having watched the trailer (which follows), or reading anything about the movie.

I do feel the need to warn you – the ending may not be what you expect it to be.

In Which We Are Almost Back To The Future

Marty McFly: where are you now? People have wondered for decades now when Marty McFly will make himself known to the world. People have wondered when he will appear in his DeLorean, straight out of 1985.

Well, okay, maybe not. But, people have wondered when we would have hoverboards. My friends, the time is nigh. They do exist, and with a little financial backing via Kickstarter, Hendo will make them commonplace!

The Equalizer: What Defines You?

Columbia’s “The Equalizer”

Do our circumstances define us? Or do we define our circumstances?

Can we change our world in order to change ourselves?

These are the questions I am left with tonight, and not exactly the questions you would expect to be considering after watching a movie you expect to be an action adventure. Tonight, my expectations were turned around.

Quote of the Day – February 23, 2012 – Vampire Hunter

“On March 4th, 1861, Abraham Lincoln – exceptional boy of Sinking Springs Farm, apple of his departed mother’s eye, survivor of the trials of Job, and one of the nation’s most accomplished vampire hunters – was sworn in as the sixteenth president of the United States.”

In Which Matthew Broderick Will Win the Super Bowl

I’m going to go out on a limb here. The Giants are not going to win the Super Bowl. The Patriots won’t either.Neither, on their greatest day, can out-perform Matthew Broderick.

The halftime show, while it may be as entertaining as Janet Jackson, or as entertaining as the Black Eyed Peas, won’t be the victor. And as much as I am so very looking forward to the new Avengers movie, the trailer for that masterpiece will fall a bit short as well.

You see, there can only be one winner, and this year that winner will be…

Broderick… Broderick… Broderick.

My sister’s boyfriend’s daughter’s bromide’s (don’t ask – I don’t understand this word either) boyfriend’s dog doesn’t have to tell me that a car commercial which parodies the great Ferris Bueller’s Day Off will be the best offering at the game today.

If you doubt my prognostication skills, shame one you.  For your viewing pleasure, I bring you what will surely be the best commercial debuting during the Super Bowl this year: Matthew’s Day Off.

You’re welcome.

Movie Review: Contraband

As much as people grimace when they think of Marky Mark from the 90’s, Mark Wahlberg has grown up to be a great actor in his own right. For me, he has elevated his craft to the point where I am happy to see any new movie has has him attached to it, even when the trailer promises an overused plot. Such is the case with Contraband.

My faith in Wahlberg paid off.

Wahlberg’s recent movie choices have been of high quality (The Fighter comes to mind.) With this in mind, I was hopeful that Contraband would be enjoyable, if predictable. And while it was predictable, there was one twist had surprised both me and the audience. I won’t ruin this for you, as I plan to keep these reviews as free of spoilers as I can.

In this movie, Wahlberg plays a retired smuggler who is drawn back into the life for one final job. I know, I know, this is what had me worried too, but I needn’t have been concerned at all. Wahlberg does a great job of building a real person. His “anti-hero” character of Chris Faraday was one that we could all stand behind and root for, and Wahlberg did a great job of keeping his characterization fresh.

Joining Wahlberg in this movie is John Foster (who plays Faraday’s fellow retired smuggler) and Giovanni Ribisi (the villian of the movie). Foster did a great job supporting Wahlberg’s Faraday, and has the important job of keeping Faraday’s family safe when Fraday takes this one last job.

Ribisi does a great job as the villain Tim Briggs. Briggs plays an up and coming underworld boss who Faraday has to pay off to save his family. As always, Ribisi does a great job of making you feel uncomfortable and maintaining a feeling of instability in his character.

I definately recommend that you see Contraband. For more information about this movie, visit IMDB at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1524137/.
